Why long-term SEO matters
Short-term SEO chases trending keywords. Long-term SEO builds an asset: a library of pages that earn links, rankings, and traffic for years. For data-driven sites, this asset is especially powerful — every dataset, every metric, and every location is a potential landing page.
The three pillars
- Depth over breadth. A single, thorough guide outperforms ten thin pages on the same topic.
- Internal linking. Every new post should link to two or three older posts, and at least one older post should link back.
- Intent matching. Read the top-ranking pages for your target query. If they're tutorials, write a tutorial — not a sales pitch.
What to publish
- Definitive guides ("What is X, and how do I use it?")
- Case studies with real numbers
- Comparisons between two approaches
- Datasets and downloads — these earn links naturally
Measuring progress
Don't obsess over daily rankings. Track:
- Indexed pages in Google Search Console
- Impressions over 90-day windows
- Referring domains (links from new sites)
Compounding takes 6–18 months to show up clearly. Keep publishing.
